Evil Dead (1983)
Evil Dead is standard horror fare in concept only. We at SoCreepy thought we were going to toss our Cheetos when we first saw it. You have college kids. The woods. Sex. Drugs. Rock and roll. Killer trees. Monsters. Blood and dismemberment. Gore galore and a health stock of shock make this a must-see part of the ultimate horror movie collection. Oh yeah, and we can’t forget Bruce Campbell and cult (now mainstream) director Sam Raimi!
Plot summary for Evil Dead:
Five friends camping out in a remote cabin discover The Book of the Dead (Necronomicon) and a tape recorder belonging to the professor who owns the cabin. They make the mistake of playing the tape, which turns out to include Candarian resurrection passages translated from the Necronomicon (The Book of the Dead). After the passages are played aloud, an evil force is unleashed from the woods. People start turning into evil deadites, which can only be killed by total body dismemberment. That’s where the fun begins and the blood really starts to flow.
Memorable scene from Evil Dead:
The film puts an interesting twist on typical horror film fare. A girl wanders into the woods alone. But instead of being chased by a knife-wielding maniac, she is chased by vines and raped by a tree (you read that correctly – raped by a tree) before being killed by trees. And you thought The Lord of the Rings had some wood!!
Memorable quote from Evil Dead:
“Why have you disturbed our sleep? Awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die!”
Why Socreepy loves Evil Dead:
Evil Dead is campy. In fact, it’s downright cheesy. That said, Evil Dead is also one of the most terrifying horror adventures ever made. Don’t believe us? Turn off all the lights and throw Evil Dead into the DVD player. Then we’ll see who’s so tough, okay?
Evil Dead was filmed in an abandoned cabin located in Morristown, Tennessee. Years after the film crew had come and gone, the cabin mysteriously burned down.
