Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Rosemary’s Baby really is a dream come true for anyone with a fascination with all things supernatural. It’s flirtation with modern day witchcraft makes it a classic horror film you won’t want to miss. What has always creeped us out about the film is something that happened a year after it was made. Director Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered along with her unborn baby by members of Charles Manson’s “family” of crazed, murderous young people.
Plot summary for Rosemary’s Baby:
Newlyweds Rosemary and Guy Woodhouse (portrayed by Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes, respectively) move into a new apartment in New York. They soon become friends with their neighbors, an elderly couple who are very friendly. The more time the couples spend together, the more strange things start to happen. After a woman Mary met in a restroom mysteriously dies, Rosemary begins hearing strange noises. Her husband starts to distance himself from the increasingly unsetted Rosemary, who now is fixating on a friends warning about witches. Rosemary is determined to provide for the safe arrival of her unborn child, but she begins to suspect the elderly neighbors have their own plans for her baby.
Memorable scene from Rosemary’s Baby:
Rosemary is sifting through items left behind by the apartment’s previous tenant and finds a note that reads, “I can no longer associate myself …”
Memorable quote from Rosemary’s Baby:
“You’re lying. It didn’t die. You took it. You’re lying. You witches! You’re lying! You’re lying! You’re lying! You’re LYING!”
Why we love Rosemary’s Baby:
The film is a very lush production with strong acting and truly creepy music. Did you know that Mia Farrow sang the title theme herself? True story! Rosemary’s Baby has at its core an unlimited supply of wit and the darkest kind of humor.
Frightening Fact:
A popular legend has emerged that Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey served as a technical adviser during the production of Rosemary’s Baby and portrayed Satan in the film’s impregnation scene. In truth, LeVey had nothing to do with the making of Rosemary’s Baby.
