Classic Vampire Halloween Costume
Being a vampire is being part of the true spirit of Halloween! On Halloween, vampires and other creatures of the night roam the Earth in search of tricks and treats. Preferably ones with a pulse!
Items you will need:
Black cape
Vampire fangs
Black cape
Tuxedo, dark suit or dark clothing
Fake blood
Hair gel
White face paint
All you need to create a good classic vampire Halloween costume is a few well-placed items. First, dress in dark clothing. A tuxedo is Dracula’s preferred style of dress, but anything dark and you’ll be no less a vampire. If you’re a female, go with black hose and a black dress. Use the white face paint to give your face and neck that lifeless look. Maybe even use a red marker to add bite marks to your own neck. Place your fangs in your mouth. Apply hair gel that makes you hair stay slicked back and wet in appearance.
Keep in mind, there are countless (haha) ways to dress as a vampire for Halloween. You can go sleek and modern, like in “Blade” or “Underworld”, you can go for a Buffy vampire look, a Victorian/Anne Rice type vampire, Nosferatu, sexy vampire – the list ends only with your imagination. Get creative and unique. For instance, how many obese vampires have you ever seen??? Think about it . . .
Frightening Fact
In darker times, Europeans thought growing fingernails were a sign that a corpse was a vampire. A dug up body that had grown new nails was staked, and likely burned or reburied with garlic to seal the corpse within the ground.
Scream Ghostface Halloween Costume
Ghostface from Scream is probably one of the easiest Halloween costumes you can create.
Items you will need:
Black hooded robe
Black jeans
Black shoes
Fake knife
The Ghostface mask
Cell phone
What’s your favorite scary movie? If it’s Scream, then Ghostface is the perfect Halloween costume for you. Wear dark clothing and shoes or boots. Put on a black hooded robe. Wear a white Ghostface mask. You’ll also need props — a fake knife and a cell phone. Now you are ready to make scary prank phone calls that end badly for the folks on the other end of the line.
The mask used by the Ghostface killer in the Scream movies is based on the painting “Scream” by Edward Munch.
Skeleton Halloween Costume
A skeleton makes for a great Halloween costume – no bones about it!
Items you will need:
Black clothing (sweats or tights work well)
White or glow-in-the dark paint
Skull mask
Start by laying your dark clothing out on the floor on a surface that is open and that can be used for painting. Paint “bones” onto the clothing where bones would appear on your body. Once finished, let the clothing dry. Put the clothing once it dries and don your skeleton mask. If you’d rather not paint, you can draw bones on paper, then cut them out and attach them to the costume – that’s kind of a drag, though – plus they can rip during the course of the Halloween party.
Frightening Fact
At birth, the human skeleton is made up of 275 different bones. As the body matures, some of these bones, such as wrist and ankle bones, fuse together leaving only 206 bones in the adult body. Ew!
History of Pumpkin Carving & Jack O’Lanterns
The history of jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin carving begins with a little fable.
The Irish told a story of a drinking chap who was a little on the shall we say, cheap side. In fact, he was notorious for not wanting pay for his ale and trying to trick others into buying, so he was nicknamed Stingy Jack.
Stingy Jack met the Devil one cold night and invited him along for drinks. It didn’t matter to Stingy Jack whether this was the Devil or not, he wasn’t going to pay. He actually convinced the Devil to become a coin so that Jack had money for their drinks. Unfortunately, Stingy Jack just decided to keep the money and not free the Devil. Supposedly, he thought better of the situation and agreed to release old Scratch on the condition that the Devil not seek any kind of revenge for a year and that if Stingy Jack died, the Devil wouldn’t keep his soul.
Oddly enough, Stingy Jack and the Devil had a couple more encounters and each time, Jack got the better end of the deal. Of course there is a reason for the term “there will be Hell to pay”. When Jack finally died, God wasn’t too keen on taking such a swindler into Heaven. The Devil didn’t want him in hell either because he was angry at being tricked.
The Devil got his revenge by forcing Stingy Jack to wander the earth forever in the dark. He was given a burning piece of coal as his only light. Jack carved out a turnip and put the coal in it to guide his path. It was Jack’s lantern. If you see Jack some lonely night or this Halloween, ask him if he’d like a beer.
FUN FACTS:The first jack-o-lanterns were actually carved turnips with candles lit inside. They were placed outside to ward off evil spirits, particulary at the time of Halloween.
Pumpkins and pumpkins seeds used to be used to cure snake bites.
