When I was a youth and I actually had time to read those things they call “books”, I started things off right. I began reading Poe and H.P. Lovecraft at an early age. Although Lovecraft was a struggle sometimes for me, I was always captivated by his writing. Of course “Herbert West: Reanimator” being one of my favorites.
Now that Halloween is over it’s time to shift gears and change things up around here to cover christm… who am I kidding. Everyday is Halloween at SoCreepy HQ!
I don’t know if this is a reflection of my current mental state or me just reminiscing about the “good ‘ol days” of horror. You know, back when the blood wasn’t CG, there was no comedy in our horror and there were “real” (latex) body parts flying all over the place. That’s right creeps, I’ve been on a slasher flick streak as of late. Now this is NOT a “best of” list. This is just what I’ve been watching and I think you should be too!
Here’s what’s been in my playlist lately:
Hatchet
A group goes on a swamp tour and falls victim to the disfigured and deranged Victor Crowley.
This one is a recent horror film that is an awesome throwback to slasher flicks of the ’80s. No CGI effects in this guy and Robert Englund makes an appearance. View the trailer
A Nightmare On Elm Street
In the dreams of his victims, a spectral child murderer stalks the children of the members of the lynch mob that killed him.
This one is the original, not that POS remake Hollywood made. Which is why I HAD to rewatch this one. I had to cleanse my eyes and ears of that dreaded remake. I’ve had many friends argue with me, but to me A Nightmare on Elm Street IS a slasher flick. They just added a “supernatural” dream twist to it. It’s got all the elements; teens, sex and gory death! The Burning “Gather around the campfire to die!”
A former summer camp caretaker, horribly burned from a prank gone wrong, goes back to the scene to start getting his revenge.
Tom Savini was the man responsible for the special effects in this one. Interesting notes about this film are that it was written by Bob & Harvey Weinstein and has a very young (and thin) Jason Alexander. View the trailer
The Prowler
In 1945, a World War II veteran returns home to Avalon Bay, New Jersey to find a “Dear John letter” left by his girlfriend. He then murders her and her new boyfriend at the graduation dance. Thirty-five years later, at the first dance since the killings, the murderer is back, decked out in battledress and with an assortment of weapons, to kill again.
The Prowler is one of Tom Savini’s better films for effects work. The pacing of this film is a bit slow, but the ending is well worth it. Plus having the killer all dressed up in battledress is pretty damn disturbing. View the trailer
Hell Night
Four college pledges are forced to spend the night in a deserted old mansion where they get killed off one by one by the monstrous surviving members of a family massacre years earlier for trespassing on their living grounds.
It’s rumored that Hollywood has added Hell Night to its ever growing list of remakes. It had been a while since I’d watched it, so I felt the need for a viewing. View the trailer
It’s creepy, but not kooky. It’s also not the Addams Family. It’s Disney’s Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) and it’s one of Socreepy’s FAVORITE Halloweenie flicks!
Back in the day (that’s code for when I was a kid), Disney made some creepy ass movies. Ever see Watcher in the Woods? You know what I’m talking about! Something Wicked This Way Comes is a little seen treasure, though.
It’s based on a Ray Bradbury story about two boys that get involved with the traveling carnival. We all know carnivals are the root of all evil – clowns, carnies, ladies in need of Nair. This one is especially sinister courtesy of Mr. Dark. Booohahaha! I don’t want to say anything more, except check out Coffy/Foxy Brown/Friday Foster/Jackie Brown herself, Pam Grier lookin’ hawty hawt! You must watch it.
Being a hardcore horror fan and artist, I’ve always been interested in the special effects side of movie making. Even as a little kid I dabbled with latex, fake blood and of course loved Halloween. So it’s always exciting to see how the movie pros do things. Robert Kurtzman of KNB EFX Group moved his shop to Ohio and is letting us in on how things are done. Check out the Creature Corps site for his web series about what exactly they do and how they do it. Check out the intro below. Cool stuff.
Tonight I’m going to watch one of my favorite movies to get myself in the mood for Halloween – Sleepy Hollow by Tim Burton. It’s everything that sums up the season for me: exciting, creepy, kind of dangerous, crisp colors, pumpkins, Christopher Walken. I think it’s a bit of underrated genius, plus it really is a classic Halloween story from back in the day. I remember watching the Disney version on t.v. every year when I was a kid.
SoCreepy wants to get you in the mood, too! For your viewing pleasure, let me tease you with some Sleepy Hollow!
